The Wisconsin School Shooting: What’s Behind this Crisis?
Inside America’s School Shooting Epidemic

Why Does America Lead the World in School Shootings?
School shootings in the United States are quickly turning into an epidemic.
The recent tragedy in Madison, Wisconsin, is a stark reminder of the recurring violence that continues to plague American schools.
In 2024 alone, the U.S. has witnessed 112 school shootings, cementing its position as a global outlier in this grim statistic.
Let’s explore why this issue needs greater attention!

The Wisconsin Incident
The December 16 shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison devastated a community:
15-year-old Natalie Rupnow opened fire during a study hall, killing a teacher and a second-grade student.
Six others were injured before Rupnow took her own life.
Police revealed that Rupnow was a student at the school and had a history of emotional distress and unsettling fascination with past school shooters.
Her manifesto, titled “War Against Humanity“, highlighted feelings of alienation and a desire for recognition through violence.
I have made contact with the alleged boyfriend of the Wisconsin shooter.
He has very graciously provided me the full manifesto, which I verified by having him screen record himself opening it from a direct link the shooter sent to him via WhatsApp.
I told him I would do my… x.com/i/web/status/1…

This tragedy has renewed calls for actionable change to address the broader epidemic of school shootings in the United States.
School Shootings in the US: The Numbers Speak
Data paints a sad picture of the prevalence of school shootings across the country:
In 2024, there were 112 school shootings, where at least one victim was injured or killed.
This year alone school shootings killed 98 victims and injured another 239 victims.
Since 2009, the U.S. has experienced more school shootings than any other developed nation.
In fact, the number of school shootings incident in the U.S. exceed those reported in other developed nations combined.
States like California, Texas, and Ohio consistently report the highest number of school shootings.
The human cost of school shootings is staggering. It leaves families shattered and communities with profound trauma with hundreds of lives lost each other.
What is Causing these School Shootings?
The root causes of school shootings are complex and interrelated. Key contributing factors include:
High rates of gun ownership and permissive laws make firearms easily accessible to everyone, including minors.
Many shooters struggle with untreated mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and feelings of alienation.
Social isolation and bullying are common experiences among shooters, which fuels resentment and, in some cases feelings of revenge.
Sensationalized coverage of shooters in media can also inspire copycat attacks by perpetrators, as it gives them recognition.
Who Are the Perpetrators?
While each case is unique, certain patterns emerge among school shooters:
Most school shooters are male adolescents, aged 14-20, often with histories of bullying and isolation.
The Wisconsin school shooter was only the 9th female school shooter since the Columbine High School killings in 1999.
Behavioral changes, such as fascination with violence and troubling social media activity are common among shooters.
Shooters often obtain guns from their homes, which highlights the need for secure storage laws.
Many are motivated by revenge, recognition, or a distorted sense of control, which drives their actions.
Natalie Rupnow wore the same shirt as the columbine shooter, Eric Harris.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

Why the United States Leads the World in School Shootings
The U.S. stands apart from other nations in its frequency of school shootings. Here’s why:
Deeply ingrained gun culture and resistance to regulation contribute to easy access to weapons.
The lack of universal background checks and inconsistent state laws exacerbate the problem.
Cultural attitudes such as exposure to violence, social pressures, and glorification of shooters in media play significant roles.
Insufficient focus on mental health and lack of social support systems leave many issues unaddressed.
What Is Being Done: Successes and Failures
Efforts to address shootings span different levels, but results are mixed:
Proposals for universal background checks and secure storage laws face strong political opposition, hindering progress.
States have implemented measures like Red Flag Laws and school safety grants.
However, their impact is uneven due to inconsistent application and limited resources.
Mental health programs and threat assessment teams at schools show promise in early identification of at-risk students.
Despite these measures, the frequency of school shootings indicates persistent gaps and the need for a more comprehensive approach.

Our Thoughts
The Wisconsin tragedy highlights the urgency of addressing school shootings in the U.S.
Despite years of debate and incremental progress, the numbers remain staggeringly high.
Solving this issue requires a broader approach that ensures schools remain places of growth and learning, not fear and violence.

What do you think is responsible for school shootings in the United States? |
📊 Last Week’s Poll: Do you think frustrations with the health insurance industry lead to incidents like the UnitedHealth CEO's murder?
“No. I think people are looking for a scape goat to put their anger upon(no matter what side you are on). This is really an issue about people forgetting the values we supposed to have, and how we are supposed to challenge issues.(Eg Civil disobedience, MLK Jr, ect). So they lash out at these important people.”
“Although I can’t speak from experience as I’m an European, as a healthcare worker I can state that the American healthcare system is utterly broken, flawed and inhumane.”
